BAU, ontwikkelplek voor onafhankelijke performancemakers, ligt aan een rustig en idyllisch pleintje aan het Entrepotdok, één van de best bewaarde pakhuiscomplexen van Europa. De oude loods aan nummer 4 heeft al sinds 1993 een dansbestemming door de intrek van choreografe Beppie Blankert en haar veelbesproken Dansers Studio. In 2018 trok BAU in het pand en creëerde er een ontwikkelplek in de stad voor onafhankelijke makers en gezelschappen binnen de dans, performance, mime en allerhande crossovers.
BAU initieert ook artist-in-residencies; in 2020 ging de Kosovaarse performancekunstenaar Astrit Ismaili een tijd in BAU aan de slag. Hun werk toont lichamen die zowel imaginair als materieel zijn door gebruik van alter ego’s, lichaamsextensies en draagbare muziekinstrumenten. Hen gebruikt zang om de rol van de stem in popcultuur en identiteitspolitiek te onderzoeken. Speciaal voor OFF VENUE heropent Astrit hun repetitieproces en toont hen een herbewerking van een eerdere voorstelling »Nemesis«. Het oorspronkelijke stuk staat in relatie tot folkloristische rituelen en liederen die een ingang bieden om om te gaan met afbakening door geopolitieke grenzen, met de ervaring van migratie, met lichamelijke autonomie en het recht op integriteit. Een voorstelling die belooft scheiding en verwijdering te overwinnen, in de brede zin van het woord, niet alleen tussen artiest en publiek. Met behulp van nieuw ontworpen instrumenten en hun opgelegde beperkingen en mogelijkheden, wil Astrit nu nieuwe manieren verkennen om met het lichaam en de ruimte om te gaan.
ASTRIT ISMAILI (Prishtina, 1991) is een in Amsterdam gevestigde performancekunstenaar uit Kosovo. Ismaili studeerde af aan de MA Performance van DasArts in Amsterdam. Hun werk was te zijn bij ISCP in New York, SALTS Basel, het KW Instituut voor hedendaagse kunst in Berlijn, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Kunstverein Amsterdam, Salzburger Kunstverein, Robert Grunenberg Gallery in Berlijn, Juliette Jongma Gallery Amsterdam, Theater Frascati Amsterdam, Korzo Theater Den Haag, Spielart Festival München, Kaserne Theater Basel etc. Astrit Ismaili werd ondersteund door het Mondriaanfonds (Project Investeringssubsidie 2018-2019). In 2011 ontving hen de Young Visual Artist Award en volgde een residentie bij ISCP in New Your. In 2012 organiseerde Astrit het performanceproject ‘Prishtine Mon Amour’ in Pristina. In de periode 2018-2019 co-cureerde hen een aantal 'Lost & Found'-evenementen in Amsterdam.

BAU, a platform for independent performance makers, is located on a quiet and idyllic square at the Entrepotdok, in one of the best-preserved warehouse complexes of Europe. The warehouse at number 4 has had a dance destination since 1993, when choreographer Beppie Blankert and her renowned Dansers Studio moved in there. In 2018 BAU acquired the building with two dance studios, turning it into a designated space for independent makers and companies within the field of dance, performance, mime and crossovers.
BAU also offers residency periods: In 2020 the Kosovar performance artist Astrit Ismaili got the opportunity to work at BAU for a while. Their work proposes bodies that consist of both imaginary and material realities, using alter egos, body extensions and wearable music instruments to embody different possibilities for becoming. Within their practice, the act of singing is used to explore the role of voice in pop culture and identity politics. For Off Venue, Astrit will open their rehearsal process to show a rework on an older piece titled »Nemesis«. The piece is initially staged in relation to folkloric rituals and songs, providing a way to deal with demarcations of geopolitical borders, experiences of migration, bodily autonomy and the right to integrity, in a performance that promises to overcome separations beyond just the one between artist and audience. Using newly designed instruments Astrit aims to explore new ways how to relate to the body and space by coping with the limitations and possibilities that these instruments offer.

They co-organised the performance project ‘Prishtine Mon Amour’ in 2012 in Pristina and co-curated of a number of ‘Lost & Found’ events in 2018-2019 in Amsterdam.
