In het hart van de Amsterdamse Chassébuurt ligt de voormalige rooms-katholieke Kerk van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Altijddurende Bijstand. Een mond vol, en daarom in de volksmond tot Chassékerk gedoopt. Nadat de kerk 1998 werd afgestoten door het Bisdom Haarlem, viel het gebouw ten prooi aan gesjoemel en verval. In 2004 werd het gebouw gekraakt en in 2007 verkocht aan Ymere, die er appartementen voor in de plaats wilde bouwen. Maar de buurt kwam in opstand. Uiteindelijk is het gebouw verkocht aan Lenny Balkissoon, een Brits-Guyanese ex-danser die er zijn droom verwezenlijkte: een volwaardige dansschool met acht studio's, een gymzaal en grand café voor de buurt én een hotel met 55 kamers om de exploitatie rendabel te maken. Ook dit ging niet zonder slag of stoot. De houten vloer bleek compleet verrot. Hij liet de vroegere crypte uitgraven en creëerde zo één van de grootste kelders in een bestaand gebouw in Nederland! In een luttele drie jaar tijd zagen omwonenden een bruisend cultureel centrum met horeca verrijzen in de voormalige kerk.
In Chassé ontdekken we de rol van improvisaties in een creatieproces. We zien hoe dankzij improvisatie werelden samenkomen, elkaar inspireren en voeden. Hiphopdanser en -choreograaf Shailesh Bahoran gaat live de dialoog aan met de indringende klanken van de Indiase luit, de sarod, gespeeld door de virtuoze musicus Avi Kishna. Shailesh is een experimentele maker in de urban scene met stevige roots in de hip-hop cultuur. Ook als choreograaf in de danswereld gooit hij hoge ogen: Zijn voorstelling Lalla Rookh (2015) won de Dans Publieksprijs, Ignite (2017) werd genomineerd voor de Zwaan voor de meest indrukwekkende dansvoorstelling en met REDO (2019) wonnen ze de Zwaan voor de beste dansperformance. Als performer valt Shailesh op door zijn veelzijdigheid en fenomenale techniek in diverse stijlen, o.a. breakdancing en popping. Shailesh laat zich voor zijn werk graag inspireren door zijn Hindoestaanse achtergrond.
Shailesh Bahoran is een theatermaker, choreograaf, danser, coach en artistiek leider van de Illusionary Rockaz Company. Hij kenmerkt zich door een vrije artistieke visie waarin hij altijd op zoek is naar het stimuleren van stemmingen en emoties bij zijn toeschouwers en de manier waarop hij contrasten benadrukt. Hij werkte onder meer samen met Het Nationale Ballet, Don’t Hit Mama, Het Nederlands Symfonieorkest, Codarts, Fontys, Vocaallab, Korzo, Spin off, Conny Janssen, Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten en ISH Dance Collective waarmee hij onder andere op het Burning Man Festival in Nevada en op Broadway New York te zien was.
In the heart of Amsterdam's Chassé neighbourhoud we find the former Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Assistance. That’s quite a mouthful, the church is therefore more widely known as the Chassékerk. After the church was divested by the Diocese of Haarlem in 1998, the building fell prey to trickery and decay. In 2004 the building was squatted and in 2007 sold to Ymere, who wanted to build apartments in its place. But the neighbourhood revolted. The building was eventually sold to Lenny Balkissoon, a British-Guyanese former dancer who realized his dream there: a fully-fledged dance school with eight studios, a gym, a grand café for the neighborhood and a hotel with 55 rooms to make the operation profitable. This was a challenge: the wooden floor turned out to be completely rotten. He had the former crypt excavated, creating one of the largest cellars in an existing building in the Netherlands! In just three years, residents of the community saw how the former churched transformed into a bustling cultural center.
In Chassé we discover the role of improvisation within a creative process. We see how, through improvisation, worlds can collide, come together and feed off one another. Hip-hop dancer and choreographer Shailesh Bahoran enters into a live dialogue with the mesmerising sounds of the most popular Indian lute, the sarod, played by the virtuoso musician Avi Kishna. Shailesh is an experimental maker in the urban scene with strong roots in hip-hop culture. He is also highly successful as a choreographer in the dance world: His performance Lalla Rookh (2015) won the Danspublieksprijs [Dance Audience Award], Ignite (2017) was nominated for the Swan for the most impressive dance performance and with REDO (2019) the company won the Swan for the best dance performance. As a performer, Shailesh distinguishes himself by his versatility and phenomenal technique in various styles, including breakdancing and popping. In his work he often uses his Hindustani background as a source of inspiration.

He has worked with The Dutch National Ballet, Don't Hit Mama, The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Codarts, Fontys, Vocaallab, Korzo, Spin off, Conny Janssen, the Amsterdam Academy for the Arts, and ISH Dance Collective which whom he performed at the Burning man festival in Nevada as well as on Broadway in New York.
